Specifically designed for use on combustible
metal fires, the Buckeye Class D extinguisher
contains a Sodium Chloride based dry powder
as the extinguishing agent. The heat generated
by the fire causes the powder to cake and form a
crust that excludes air and dispenses the heat from
the burning metal. Magnesium, potassium, sodium,
and sodium-potassium alloys can be extinguished
with the Class D unit. There is also data that shows
zirconium, uranium, and powdered aluminum fires
can be controlled and extinguished using this
extinguisher.
This extinguisher features a discharge assembly that is
specifically designed for fighting Class D fires. The
extension portion keeps the operator away from the
extreme heat and toxic fumes that may be generated
by the burning metal. The even discharge is easily
controlled to provide a non-dispersing application of
the agent. The applicator can be quickly detached if a
straight stream of the agent is required for a greater
range, narrow discharge pattern, or a lobbing effect.
