ANSI Safety Vest Rules
The conditions a worker is exposed to will determine the type of safety vest that should be worn. For instance, if you are exposed to traffic that exceeds 25 miles per hour, you should be wearing an ANSI class 2 safety vest. According to ANSI standards, class II vests must have 775 square in. of background material, and 201 square in. of reflective material. If you are a railway worker, school crossing guard, parking and toll gate personnel, airport ground crew worker or law enforcement personnel directing traffic, ANSI requirements say you should be wearing a class 2 vest.
Class 3 vests, according to ANSI should be worn by workers exposed to high risk environments and traffic exceeding 50 miles per hour. An ANSI class 3 safety vest has 1240 square in. of background material and 310 square in. of reflective material. A class 3 vest is your ideal vest if you are in a line of work that includes roadway construction personnel, vehicle operatoration, utility work, survey crew, emergency responce, railway work and accident site investigation.
